Activities

Nothing beats spending the day relaxing at Tresaith Beach before returning home to do some star gazing in this amazing dark skies hotspot from around the fire pit or in the hot tub. Whether you just want to stroll along the sand or explore the rock pools, paddle by the waterfall, sunbathe, swim, kayak, paddle board or do a bit of dolphin spotting, the beach offers something for everyone. But if you are looking for something else to do while staying at Ty Nant, you won't be disappointed with the choice of activities on offer in the local area. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

Walking and rambling

The Wales Coast Path is 5 minutes' from our doorstep at Ty Nant. Walk north towards Penbryn and Llangrannog, or if you feel able, continue on to Cwmtydu and New Quay and return by bus or taxi. The views are breathtaking. Alternatively, walk south along the easier strecth of Coast Path to Aberporth.

There are also some beautiful walks along the River Teifi, including a short, accessible, raised boardwalk stretch at Cenarth Falls, and a varied riverside stretch through the Welsh Wildlife Centre & Teifi Marshes into the ravine leading to Cilgerran Castle.

If you fancy a day away from the coast and up in the hills, then take a walk up on the Preseli Hills. We can recommend a circular walk from Rosebush so that you can finish your day with refreshments at the famous Tafarn Sinc. This iconic pub made of red painted, corrugated galvanised iron, still has sawdust on the floors and is packed with artefacts and character. Food is made from local ingredients and dogs are welcome in the front bar.

Go to our Walks page for some of our other favourite local walks.

Fun for all the Family

If your kids love the beach, they will love Tresaith and Aberporth which are both safe for paddling and swimming. But if you are looking for other child-friendly activities, try Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park or if you don't mind driving a little further, try Folly Farm in Pembrokeshire. Children up to the age of 10 might also enjoy a visit to the Felinwynt Cafe and Playbarn.

For an ice cream treat, visit Angelato in Aberaeron. Their waffles are to die for!

For the sporty and the adventurous

From surfing, rafting and kayaking to coasteering, archery and axe throwing, the choices are endless. A good place to start is at Adventure Beyond, or you could also try Teifi Gorge Canoeing and White Water Rafting with Cardigan Bay Active.

If fishing is your thing, then there are trips accommodating all ages at New Quay. Go to Epic Fishing Trips for more details.

There are some beautiful golf courses near to Ty Nant, including Clwb Golff Aberteifi Cardigan Golf Club offering views over Poppit Sands and Cardigan Island, and the picturesque 9 hole course with three lakes at Cwmrhydneuadd Golf Club. We would also recommend Newport Sands Golf Club which enjoys amazing views of the beach and estuary and has the excellent Cat Rock Cafe for some post game refreshments.

Wildlife Spotting

You can see dolphins, seals, jellyfish and all kinds of birdlife from our own beach at Tresaith, but if you would like to go out to sea and get even closer to the wildlife, we can recommend one of the boat trips from New Quay, such as SeaMor or the original Dolphin Spotting Boat Trips who offer trips of different durations (well behaved dogs can usually come too). But if you fancy switching it up a gear and want to go a lot faster while you're wildlife spotting, then A Bay to Remember is an absolute blast. Depending on the tide, A Bay To Remember depart from St Dogmaels, Poppit Sands or Gwbert, and trips take you out of the estuary and along the coast towards Ynys Lochtyn near Llangrannog, before taking in some caves at Cemaes Head. Super cool!

Also worth a visit are the Welsh Wildlife Centre & Teifi Marshes, one of the filming locations for BBC's Autumnwatch. Visitors can choose from a range of trails and enjoy the various otter and bird hides in the marshes and among the trees, or follow the path into the Teifi river ravine and do a bit of otter spotting. There is canoe hire on site, as well as willow sculptures, a play area, a shop and cafe and picnic areas.

Places of historical interest

If history is your thing, then the countryside around Tresaith is full of hidden treasures to pique your curiosity, including ancient chapels, deserted lime kilns, standing stones and circles and old forts. (As it happens, the two abandoned lime kilns at Tresaith and the Ship Inn were both featured in the brilliant novel In Two Minds by Alis Hawkins which makes an excellent holiday read for anyone staying at Ty Nant.) But there are plenty of other places to visit during your stay. Some of our favourites are:

Cardigan Castle - A medieval castle on the banks of the River Teifi which was the birthplace of Wales' biggest cultural festival, the Eisteddford, and is now also home to a new, family friendly Escape Room game.

Llanerchaeron - A fascinating and elegant Georgian villa designed by architect John Nash, who went on to design some of the UK's greatest landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch, Regent Street and Brighton's Royal Pavilion. Now owned by the National Trust, the house is packed with curiosities and is set in the pretty wooded valley alongside the River Aeron. A visit includes walks around the parkland and lake, the walled garden and the farmyard. There is a small cafe and some lovely walks from the car park up and through the woods or along the abandoned railway line trail into Aberaeron.

Dylan Thomas Trail - Dylan Thomas came to live in New Quay in September 1944 and while there he began his most famous work, Under Milk Wood. Many of its characters are said to have been based on the the folk Thomas met in New Quay and the landscape is inspired by places in and around the harbour town. Follow in Dylan Thomas' footsteps on a trail that takes in the site of his former home as well the writer's favourite hostelries, such as The Black Lion

A little further afield into Pembrokeshire are Carew Castle and Pembroke Castle. Both are well worth a day trip, as is the picturesque St David's, Britain's snallest city.

Culinary delights

We really are spoiled for choice when it comes to food and drink specialities in West Wales, and many producers are open to visitors, including the following:

Caws Cenarth - The home of the best artisan cheeses in West Wales. Visit the factory, watch cheese such as Perl Las and Perl Wen being made, then treat yourself in the shop.

In The Welsh Wind - How lucky are we to have an award-winning Gin Distillery just up the road? Based in a former pub, In the Welsh Wind can create bespoke spirits tailored to you in their copper pot stills, and they now have a state of the art 5,000 litre whisky still making 100% grain to malt Welsh whisky. Visitors can see the stills, enjoy a G&T in the bar or take part in Gin Making or Gin Tasting Experiences. (If you need a taxi home, simply call Olly at Tresaith Taxis on 01239811476. Olly is based just up the road from Ty Nant.)

Afon Mel Honey Farm and Meadery - A picturesque, family run honey farm on the outskirts of New Quay. Visit the bee exhibition, learn about mead making, browse the gift shop and sample the goods in the Licensed Coffee Shop.

Local Producers Market - If you are looking for some local Welsh produce, visit this weekly market, held in front of St Dogmaels Abbey ruins every Tuesday morning from 9am to 1pm. There is parking close by, off the main street. Regulars include local fisherman (Cardigan Bat lobster and crab is to die for), bakers, locally grown fruit and veg and local cheeses.

Arts and Crafts

Mwldan - The place to go in Cardigan for Live Theatre, Comedy and Music Shows or to see the latest movies on one of three Cinema screens. There is a bar for drinks and snacks.

National Wool Museum - Discover the spellbinding story of the Welsh woollen industry and visit the restored buildings at Cambrian Mills. There is 'A Woolly Tale' trail for families to follow, with the opportunity to try your hand at carding, spinning and dsewing along the way.

Cariad Glass - Stained Glass studio in the small markjet town of Llandysul. Visitors can watch the experts at work and browse their ecclectic range of unique gifts. Cariad glass also run workshops and courses. See their website for details.
